Chapter 17

Alisa greeted her with a small wave and matching smile. “Hey, sorry it took me so long to visit you here. To be honest, I wasn't sure how serious you were.”

Sophia laughed, “Right, sometimes people say, 'let's hang out one day,'“ she feigned overdone enthusiasm, “when they actually mean never! But I'm glad you came, pick out a couple things and we'll have supper.” Alisa's face brightened when she saw that Sophia was glad to see her, and she perused the bunker of baked goods. She found a table in the back, sat down with her ham, spinach, and feta cheese croissant, and Sophia joined a minute later.

Alisa's eyes widened at Sophia’s mound of food. Two croissant sandwiches, a bun filled with pulled pork and barbecue sauce, and a chocolate crème paczki. Sophia looked up and reacted, “What? They're all small and I skipped lunch. Besides, that little thing,” she gestured toward Alisa's croissant with her own, “isn't gonna fill you up. You're gonna want a pork bun before you leave, mark my words.”

Alisa giggled. “We'll see about that, you're sure I can't pay for them? I feel bad, we barely know each other!”

Sophia dismissed the protest with a wave of her hand, “Forget about it, see these are the kinds of benefits that come with my friendship. Free pastries, delightful conversations, a hearty chuckle here and there. And all it'll cost you is a bit of time!” she said with a big smile that Alisa shared.

“Sounds like a good deal to me.”

“Speaking of barely knowing each other, I'm studying business management so that I can take this place over one day and do a good job of it. What about you?”

Alisa’s enthusiasm waned, she ruffled her brow and answered, “I'm in pre-law. My Dad's a lawyer and Mom's a Biology professor, here actually. At first, I wanted to avoid Uconn since my mom works here but free tuition is hard to pass up. Especially since my parents would only pay for my first two years.”

“Pre-law? You don't seem very excited about it.”

Alisa shrugged. “Yeah... it was mostly my Dad's idea. They wanted me to be a doctor, lawyer, or scientist, with little room for negotiation. Don't like the sight of blood, and I'm terrible at math, so that leaves lawyer. It's a good thing I like to read true crime,” she said without a shred of enthusiasm, “but that's about the only thing we do in all my classes. Read old case files and talk about their arguments, what could've been better, why they lost, that sort of thing. The worse part about it is just how dry it is, I swear they could make the most interesting, mastermind criminal sound like I'm reading some product's terms of agreement.”

Sophia let out an abrupt laugh, “That doesn't sound so bad, talking about the cases must be interesting.”

“It can be, I just... don't like arguing with people.” Alisa cringed at her own admission.

Sophia laughed again but held back when it made her new friend frown.
